What Is Session Prep and Why It Changes Everything About Therapy

By Maestro · 5 min read · August 1, 2026

Session prep is simple to describe: before each therapy appointment, you spend a few minutes preparing a brief note covering how you have been feeling since your last session, what you want to work on, and anything important your therapist should know.

That description makes it sound modest. The effect is not.

Why most people do not do it

Session prep feels unnecessary until you understand how much time gets lost without it.

A typical therapy session without preparation: you sit down, your therapist asks how you are, you give a general answer and start recapping your week. You spend 15 to 20 minutes in this orientation phase before arriving at something you can actually work on. Then there are 30 minutes left.

A session with preparation: you sit down with a note covering the three things most on your mind, your mood trend from the week, and a specific question you want to explore. You spend 45 minutes on actual work.

Same session length. Completely different depth.

What goes into a session prep note

You do not need much. A session prep note is not a full report, it is a compass.

At minimum: how you have been feeling since your last session, what you most want to discuss today, and anything important your therapist should know that might not come up naturally.

Optional but useful: specific moments from the week that felt significant, any patterns you noticed, and a question you want your therapist to help you answer.

The note should take five to ten minutes to write. If it takes longer, you are writing too much.

How to build the habit

The prep note is only useful if you arrive with material to put in it. That means logging things during the week, capturing significant moments and thoughts as they happen.

The combination of between-session logging and pre-session review is the full preparation cycle. Log during the week. Review and organize before the session. Arrive with a note.

Symplia is built around this exact cycle. The journal and Quick Log features make between-session capture low-friction. The session prep section helps you organize what you have logged into a clear note before each appointment.
